3rd Grade

Third grade is an exciting year for students! They are becoming more independent, higher- level thinkers as they make the transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Students respond to text while supporting their ideas with evidence across various genres. They will continue to build comprehension skills such as inferring, summarizing and generalizing. Students learn to write for different audiences and purposes, including personal narratives, poetry, informational text and opinion. Third graders also learn how to read and write cursive, including how to sign their names. In math students are learning multiplication, division, fractions, geometry, and so much more. They apply this knowledge to real world problems, including multi-step problems, and practice explaining their thinking in words and pictures. The social studies curriculum includes state and local history.  Science includes topics such as heredity, weather, and forces. Embedded in the daily activities are social and emotional learning skills. Third grade is a busy year full of exciting challenges and new opportunities!
