Engineering & Technology
All students at Spaulding Memorial School participate in weekly technology classes. Classes consist of Digital Citizenship, coding, keyboarding and general technology use. We also emphasize the thought process behind coding, debugging and STEAM. Students are encouraged to use their schema (Prior Knowledge) and curiosity to help them with guided exploration of the uses and issues of Technology in the 21st century.
We are currently using the Digital Passport program for developing online and offline Digital Citizenship skills. We also emphasize the concept of LARK. Students ask themselves, “Is it Legal, Is it Appropriate? Is it Responsible? Is it Kind?”
Coding skills are achieved through several different websites including Code.org, Lightbot, Kodable, BrainPop and others. There is an emphasis on process, critical thinking and helping develop a Growth Mindset. Through these sites, students are also learning the history of and the inner workings of computers.
Students will also have the chance to explore different aspects of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math). Throughout the year we will be offering third and fourth grade students the chance to work with TinkerCrates, Model Rockets, DoodleCrates and working on a cardboard arcade project.
